RAP payment on $160,000 income: single parent with one child
RAP: $1,283.33 a month in year one. IBR: $1,062.83 (10% version).
How the numbers come out
- $160,000 falls in RAP's 10% band, so the yearly base payment is 10% of the whole amount: $16,000.00 a year, or $1,333.33 a month.
- Subtracting $50 for the one dependent brings RAP to $1,283.33 a month.
- IBR counts only income above $32,460 (150% of the 2026 poverty line for 2 people): 10% of the rest is $1,062.83 a month, or $1,594.25 at the 15% rate for borrowers who owed a federal loan on July 1, 2014. IBR can't go above the 10-year standard payment.
- In year one, IBR's payment (10% version) is $220.50 a month lower than RAP's.
- With a $20,000 balance, the RAP payment pays the loan off in 2 years, faster than the 10-year Standard plan.
