What PSLF requires

  • 120 qualifying payments on Direct Loans, made after Oct. 1, 2007, under a qualifying plan: RAP, IBR, PAYE or ICR (until they close), or the 10-year Standard plan. StudentAid.gov says Tiered Standard payments don’t count.
  • Full-time work for a qualifying employer when you make the payments and when you apply: an average of at least 30 hours a week, across one or more qualifying jobs.
  • Qualifying employers: federal, state, local or tribal government (including the military), public child or family service agencies, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal colleges, and some other nonprofits that provide certain public services.
  • Not in default when you apply.
