RAP payment on $130,000 income: married filing jointly with two children
RAP: $983.33 a month in year one. IBR: $670.83 (10% version).
How the numbers come out
- $130,000 falls in RAP's 10% band, so the yearly base payment is 10% of the whole amount: $13,000.00 a year, or $1,083.33 a month.
- Subtracting $50 for each of the 2 dependents brings RAP to $983.33 a month.
- IBR counts only income above $49,500 (150% of the 2026 poverty line for 4 people): 10% of the rest is $670.83 a month, or $1,006.25 at the 15% rate for borrowers who owed a federal loan on July 1, 2014. IBR can't go above the 10-year standard payment.
- In year one, IBR's payment (10% version) is $312.50 a month lower than RAP's.
- For a married couple filing jointly, the income is the couple’s combined AGI. If both spouses have federal loans, each pays a share in proportion to their part of the combined debt.
- With a $20,000 balance, the RAP payment pays the loan off in 2 years, faster than the 10-year Standard plan.
